How to Change Your Salon’s Primary Category on Google

SOMOS Editorial · Updated November 1, 2026

Pick the best salon category and safely update your Google Business Profile.

1. Pick what the business actually is

Choose the most specific available category that describes the main business. A hair salon, barber shop, and nail salon serve different search intents. Do not choose unrelated categories solely to chase traffic.

2. Edit the category in Business Profile

Sign in, open your Business Profile, select Edit profile, find Business category, click Edit, choose the primary category and Save. Google may review the change and may ask you to verify again.

3. Use additional categories only when accurate

Google allows additional categories for genuine secondary business functions. If the salon also offers a distinct service that matches a category, add it where appropriate; do not add every beauty-related category.

4. Review effects over time

Changing categories can affect what services and attributes Google offers and how a business appears in searches. Track directions, profile calls, website clicks, and booking inquiries instead of expecting immediate ranking jumps.

5. Complete service details

Add relevant services with honest descriptions and pricing where available, and make sure the website explains the same specialties.
